The Cowichan Wine and Culinary Festival started off with a bang tonight at the Satellite Bar & Grille at the Arbutus Ridge Country Club. The food was excellent as one would expect, take a look at what was available to sample:

  • Sage and Prosciutto Wrapped Wild Sockeye Salmon, on Armenian Flatbread
  • Seafood Ragout in a Crispy Wonton
  • Asian Chicken Popsicles
  • Tomato Fresh Basil and Roasted Garlic Bruschetta
  • Tomato Water Soda Pop
  • Potato Martini Bar
  • Beef Ragout, Chicken Mushroom Stew, Vegetable Confetti
  • Buttermilk Scented Potatoes

Of course, one of the reasons to either live in the Cowichan or visit the Cowichan is for the fabulous wines and other delights available and a number of wineries and cideries were present showing off their best creations. Averill Creek VineyardGodfrey-Brownell Vineyards and Alderlea Vineyards were represented as well as Merridale Estate Cidery. Needless to say, I had to sample a few of these and found a number of the wines to be very palatable! The festivities included the sabering of a new Rocky Creek Winery sparkling wine that was very pleasant, not too sweet and a big hit with the crowd!

The weekend has more to offer, for additional information visit the Cowichan Wine and Culinary Festival web site at http://wines.cowichan.net.

  1. just curious what you thought of the sparkling that was being sabered in the photos? You didn’t mention anything about it.

  2. Hi Mark,

I just updated the post, credit required where due! I’m not a huge fan of bubbly but quite liked the sparkling wine. Not overly sweet, crisp, the right amount of sparkling, went down very smoothly. I know it was a hit with the crowd by the comments I heard around me. I sure can’t claim to be a wine connoisseur so I expect this comment is a little “vague” but yeah, it was excellent.

Have got to try sabering some day but I’ll practice before trying the technique on the good stuff!
